A Beginner's Guide to Coffee Tasting

Coffee tasting — or “cupping” — is the practice of observing the flavors and aromas of brewed coffee. You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy it. Here’s a simple guide.

Step 1: Smell

Before you take a sip, bring the cup close and inhale. What do you notice? Fruity notes? Chocolate? Nuts? The aroma tells you a lot about what’s coming.

Step 2: Slurp

Yes, slurping is encouraged. It aerates the coffee and spreads it across your palate, helping you pick up more flavors.

Step 3: Identify

Think about what you’re tasting:

  • Acidity — Is it bright and crisp? (Like citrus or berries)
  • Body — Does it feel light, creamy, or heavy?
  • Finish — How long does the flavor linger?

Step 4: Enjoy

There’s no right or wrong answer. The best coffee is the one you enjoy drinking.
